In 2009, we aim to provide at least 22,000 books, at a cost of £2 a book (but worth an estimated £72,000 due to the high value donations we receive from UK publishers) for our partners in Cameroon. We respond to partner libraries’ detailed request forms so that the materials they receive are relevant and appropriate to their needs.

    Situation

In Cameroon, the adult literacy rate for those aged 15 and over is 67.9%, which means that almost one-third of the adult population are unable to read and write with understanding . Although around 82% of children are now enrolled in primary school, rural enrolment is much lower than in urban areas. Cameroon is desperately short of learning resources and girls are still missing out on an education. Low levels of school enrolment also mean that children miss out on access to information and support on health related issues, including HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, and information that can help them deal with exploitation. Book Aid International works work in partnership with the British Council in Cameroon, which has played a pivotal role in developing 20 community libraries in the north-west and south-west Anglophone provinces. The libraries are supported by local councils, government officials and the communities who build, furnish and manage the libraries. Books change lives. We need to raise £48,000 to provide these books and manage our programme in Cameroon in 2009.
