In 2009, we aim to provide at least 2,500 books, at a cost of £2 a book (but worth an estimated £30,000 due to the high value donations we receive from UK publishers) for our partners in Palestine. We respond to partner libraries’ detailed request forms so that the materials they receive are relevant and appropriate to their needs.

    Situation

There are over 1.7 million children under the age of 15 in the West Bank and Gaza and their education has suffered greatly. The poverty rate among Palestinian children has tripled since 1999, reaching 70%. Under these circumstances, children are often forced to become breadwinners to survive. Prolonged periods of curfew and school closure, as well as the daily violence on the streets, has increased the need for places where children, in particular, can study, play and learn. We provide books for libraries and community centres, giving free access to books that would otherwise be an unaffordable luxury for many Palestinian families. In 2009, we aim to provide approximately 2,500 books worth an estimated £30,000. Our partners include the British Council, which works to support organisations in the region, including Tamer Institute for Community Education, an educational, non-governmental, non-profit organisation, working to encourage reading, expression of personal experience, and creativity. In 2005 Tamer Institute was given the Medchild Award for the promotion of children's rights and their development.
