In 2009, we aim to provide at least 12,000 books, at a cost of £2 a book (but worth an estimated £145,000 due to the high value donations we receive from UK publishers) for our partners in Somalia. We respond to partner libraries’ detailed request forms so that the materials they receive are relevant and appropriate to their needs.

    Situation

We work with Africa Educational Trust (AET) in Somaliland and Puntland. AET has established library resource centres in secondary schools, primary school reading rooms, and satellite book box schemes. Local communities are involved in planning and management and consulted over services. Workshops for literacy and library workers use traditional short stories and basic readers on HIV/AIDS, human rights, health and the environment. Book Aid International provides high quality books donated by UK publishers and locally produced materials in translation, mainly for younger readers and the newly literate. The Somali language is the medium of instruction for schools up to grade 8, but English is taught from grade 4 to grade 7, and from grade 8 English is the medium of instruction. Books change lives. We need to raise £26,000 to provide these books and to manage our programme in Somalia in 2009.
