    Situation

The choir of Hereford Cathedral is regarded as one of the finest in the country singing up to eight choral services per week in addition to a programme of concerts (one of Bach’s Passions is performed each Holy Week and the Christmas Oratorio on a biennial basis), orchestral Eucharists, and much more. In addition the Foundation provides a summer series of free lunchtime organ concerts. The choir consists of 18 boy choristers and six lay clerks (adult singers), who are supplemented with an addition three supernumeraries for weekend and major services. The cathedral’s Willis organ, restored in 2004 through a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and other supporters, is regarded as among the finest in the country. The cathedral also works closely with schools throughout the diocese and runs a number of singing outreach programmes. These include a series of school and cathedral based workshops, incorporating the cathedral choristers, which culminates in a concert in the cathedral; the running of Herefordshire Junior Choir, a community based children’s choir; and a programme of support for teachers in schools. This work has been acknowledged as a key component of the Government’s Music Manifesto. Annual support of the choir of £100,000 has to be secured annual however it is hoped that the Perpetual Trust’s choral investment fund can be built up to a sum of around £7 million in order to secure the financial future of the foundation.
