“I feel lonely here in the UK. I find it difficult to trust people due to the experiences that I had during my childhood. Support from Neville Street staff is helping me to deal with this and through attending the groups with my child I am making new friends. I want my child to have a happier childhood than I did with lots of positive experiences.” A young parent Barnardo’s Cardiff Neville Street Project strives to improve the quality of life for children and families from ethnic minority communities many of whom experience discrimination or racism.

    Situation

Although the families we work with at Neville Street live in a multi-cultural capital city, it is still sadly evident that children from minority ethnic communities are more likely to suffer discrimination, social isolation and exclusion. Many families find it difficult to access other services, due to cultural or language barriers or lack of information and resources. Our Neville Street Project is a lively, multi-cultural children’s centre in central Cardiff which provides a range of family support, advocacy and play services to disadvantaged families in Riverside, Grangetown and Butetown. We offer a wide range of services and resources for parents and children including open-access play sessions, skills workshops, activity groups, play schemes and outings, and individual casework. Crucially, we provide language support to all families who do not have English as a first language via our in-house interpreter service. We empower children and families to participate fully in the local community, to challenge discrimination and to achieve their rights. Over 400 children, young people and their families benefit from Neville Street’s services every year. “I thought I was living on another planet… now that’s all changed thanks to Neville Street. The centre has been a lifeline for me and my children and I have recaptured my self-confidence.”
