“Before Dr B’s I had no friends, money, skills or a job. Now I have my own flat, friends and a job. I never thought I would get a job I love.” Former Dr B’s Trainee In Harrogate, our Dr B’s Training Restaurant offers vulnerable young people, with a wide range of learning and social needs, training in the hotel and catering industry. Our on site training, and work experience, and external work placements, gives young people viable opportunities to secure future employment and be part of their community, rather than being cut off from it. We urgently need your help to raise £10,000, so that we can replace our old catering equipment and purchase new specialised items. Your support will ensure that we can provide the best possible facilities to meet the diverse needs of all our trainees.

    Situation

Dr B’s Training Restaurant is a successful project providing a comprehensive accredited training and work experience programme in the catering and hotel industry. We help local young people who are often disadvantaged and excluded because of their physical or learning needs, as well as, those young people who are at risk of homelessness, have offended or are at risk of offending. Our aim is to provide a supportive, dynamic approach to equip each young person with the skills to become independent, self motivated, informed and empowered in order to take control of their own lives. As well as being a successful training centre, Dr B’s is also an award winning restaurant which is open daily to the general public. This setting provides a realistic working environment from which our young people are able to develop the knowledge and skills required for future employment in the hospitality industry. Our award-winning restaurant shows the wider public what our trainees can do when given a chance:- “Enjoyed a great meal. Food was of an excellent standard, delicious and varied. This surpassed many of the so-called professional restaurants in the surrounding area”. Young people also undertake a work experience placement outside the project, giving them the opportunity to experience working life in the real world, to mix with new colleagues and transfer skills and knowledge to the outside world. Every contribution we receive will help us towards our budget of £10,000 to replace old catering equipment and improve our specialised facilities. Specifically, your support could help us to purchase a new cooker, talking scales and magnifiers to help the visually impaired, colour coded equipment and materials for dyslexic trainees and left handed potato peelers and kitchen scissors. These are just a few examples of the long list of items necessary to enable these vulnerable young people to develop the essential skills they need to enter the catering industry.
