    Situation

Sexual abuse of children is not a rare occurrence. It happens at all social levels, in all parts of the country and in all races and cultures. But despite increased public awareness, the full extent of child sexual abuse remains hidden. Children who have been abused suffer feelings of guilt and shame which can dramatically affect their lives as adults. Relieving such trauma can take years of intensive counselling. Barnardo’s Skylight Project is the only service of its kind in Edinburgh and provides individual counselling, therapeutic play work and art therapy to help lessen the impact of the trauma children and young people have suffered. We also support parents so that they in turn can best support their children. We also provide consultancy and training with social work staff, carers and other professionals. This can be relating to work with a particular young person or about general sexual abuse issues. Skylight is well respected service, proven for its ability in helping to protect and heal vulnerable children. They often comment that they feel safe and relaxed at our centre, which helps them feel comfortable to talk to our trained staff, on a one to one basis about their experiences. ‘Barnardo’s have helped me get things off my chest and helped me to know that I am strong in a lot of ways’ Anthony (12)
