    Situation

Home-Start support to a family works because it is seen as a preventative/early intervention service when a family is experiencing difficulties and needs some support to overcome them. The volunteers work alongside the family, at the family's pace to help them reach their full potential. This may be achieved by helping them to access additional support from their local community, or specialist advice for a particular need. Or, being there as a friend to a lonely isolated family. £1000 pays for support to a family for a whole year - i.e. visits from a volunteer each week for 2 to 3 hours (£20 per week - so the per hour, per child figure is much lower). This includes all costs - training and supervision of volunteers, travel costs, and running costs of the charity. it is a small price to pay for the prevention of family break-up and children going into care.
