Our pioneering disability programme ‘Activenture’ offers over 300 young people coping with multiple and complex special challenging adventure courses that are not accessible to them elsewhere. Young volunteers give one-to-one support, providing encouragement, practical help and friendship to their disabled partner.

    Situation

Run from London Youth’s two outdoor activity centres Activenture aims to give disabled young people an adventurous, social carefree time away from their daily routine. Programmes incorporate physically challenging activities, such as canoeing and abseiling with social events and day trips. All supervised by trained instructors, medical professionals and volunteers. The benefits of Activenture are immense, helping young people with disabilities to push the boundaries of their experience and develop greater self-confidence. The respite care gives parents a break from the demands of caring for a disabled child, allowing them to re-charge their batteries and devote some quality time to their other children. Unique to Activenture is the ‘buddy’ programme whereby young volunteers recruited and trained by London Youth partner disabled young people. This provides an all too rare opportunity for able-bodied and disabled young people to come together, forge friendships and overcome a widespread lack of understanding about disability. In order to keep prices affordable London Youth has to secure over 50% of programme costs from external funders every year. Cost breakdown:- £19,500 will cover the costs of an Activenture week, benefiting 20-25 young disabled people and accompanying volunteers. £850 will pay for a disabled guest and a ‘volunteer’ buddy to attend a week.
