    Situation

It is beyond debate that engagement in sport or physical activity can have a positive impact on mental and physical health and feelings of self worth. Last year 249,666 young Londoners were obese, and 1 in 3 failed to take part in any regular exercise. Getting Ready aims to engage young people of diverse backgrounds and abilities, steering them away from personal and social exclusion and into communal and healthy activity. The project will build the capacity of youth clubs and youth workers to provide a range of sporting activities that young people have said they would like to participate in. The programme is not aimed at the elite – it will engage young people of all abilites and ethnicities; girls as well as boys; disabled young people as well as able bodied; and those excluded from participating in sport by their social and economic background. Getting Ready will offer a diverse programme of sports related activities starting squarely from the tastes and aspirations of young Londoners, including basketball, boxing, football, table tennis, street athletics, indoor rowing, tape ball cricket and street dance. Coaching packs, equipment and training opportunities will be provided for youth leaders and young people to run programmes within their own clubs, and enable them to become referees, umpires and sports officials. In each region we will work with 25-30 youth organisations engaging around 900 young people. Getting Ready will cost £89,000 per region per year to run. The initiative will begin in East and Central London, and be rolled out to the North, South and West of the city as funding is secured.
