Being disabled is expensive. For some disabled people taking a break from day to day living is almost an impossible dream. Our "Independence Days" Fund will support people on low incomes, enabling them to have much-needed breaks in an environment which is equipped for their physical needs and is welcoming and accepting of difference.

    Situation

The aim of the project is to enable disabled people, their families, friends and carers to experience the challenge of outdoor adventure and enjoy quality time together. We need to raise funds now, to help more disabled people to take a break in 2010. Taking part in activities such as climbing, abseiling, horse-riding, kayaking, swimming and sailing, visitors to our centre can achieve their equivalent of flying higher than Mount Everest as they overcome fears and physical limitations to amaze themselves and their families: “It was real eye-opener for our [able-bodied son] to see his disabled sister being able to do so many things he never thought possible. He has seen her in a new and very positive light.” Project end goals: Our aim is to encourage disabled people to move from dependence to independence by demonstrating, to themselves and their families, just how much they can do to enrich the quality of their lives. Disability can be isolating and frustrating. At Calvert we bring people together. Many of our activities rely on responsibility and co-operation. Each member of the team is important and has a contribution to make. We will contact people three-six months following their visit to see what they are doing differently eg taking up a new hobby or sport, going shopping or visiting friends and family. Financial Breakdown: Calvert Trust Exmoor is a not for profit charity and the money that we are seeking would pay for guests full board and participation in activities for the length of their visit. 100% of the funding that we are seeking would be used to support the visitors. We would use our own resources to advertise the Independence Days project to reach families, individuals and groups from across the UK , in addition to contacting our waiting list of people who are in need of financial support to take a break. Funding support for visits varies from approximately £54 to £108 per person per day in March to £71- £153 per person per day in September. It is usual for disabled visitors to bring a carer, family or friends so, as an example, one "Independence Days" weekend in March for four would be £840. For a group of 20 for a Mon-Fri break the cost would be £4200.
