BAC is embarking on an architectural improvisation with architect Steve Tompkins (The Young Vic, NT Studio) to deliver a programme of capital works tied into three building-wide promenade peformance projects. The second project will be focused on children and young people giving them an interactive theatre experience over more than 50 spaces - the dialogue leading up to and following this project will deliver a series of capital works creating a 21st century performance landscape that plays to the strengths of our 19th century listed building.

    Situation

BAC's 1st Playground Project 'The Masque of the Red Death' has involved staff and resident arts organisations relocating around the building and BAC recovering areas that were not used through asbestos and neglect. A series of capital projects conceived by artists, architect, audiences and staff have revealed features lost to renovations in the 20th Century opening out the 19th century lungs of the building, unearthing original fireplaces and creating a performance landscape on the 1st floor. The production has also engaged hundreds of volunteers in design, staging and stewarding and ran participatory programmes for hundreds of disadvantaged children and young people. Over 40,000 people came to see The Masque of the Red Death with an additional 6,000 coming to the Red Death Lates events. We are now looking to the second building wide playground project in the Autumn of 2009. The Autumn 2010 project will be delivered in partnership with leading children's writers and will engage schools from across London and beyond. BAC has a target of £2,000,000 for capital works related to the production and the future of participatory spaces at BAC. In addittion we need to raise £240,000 towards the production budget including £70,000 for participatory projects ranging from artists residencies in schools at £5,000 through to projects engaging socially excluded young people in the design and staging of a major show at £20,000. If your interested, we would be delighted to provide more detail.
