Bexley has a wonderful museum collection - everything from pre-dynastic pottery to corsets and mangles - but it's all in store. We want to get it on display and make our community proud of its heritage.

    Situation

Bexley's museum collection has over 50,000 objects collected since the 1920s. It includes the archive of Britain's first commercial silk farm, Egyptian pottery, 11th century coins, 1930s Mobo ride on toys, and the archive from the David Evans sillk works. Everything from agriculture and 20th century industry to archaeology and armour. For years it has been in store. Now with the restoration of Hall Place we have an opportunity to display it, in a changing series of displays, so that all our 100,000 visitors each year can learn about their heritage. We will also use the collection to encourage people to contribute their own memories and to go off and learn more about their heritage through archives and in other collections. We already have a good track record of arts projects using our collection as a starting point, and good links with other local museums where we can collaborate on loans and joint displays. We recently put on a small display for Museums and Galleries Month and it was so popular it really convinced us of the urgency of making this invaluable resource properly available for all. The house is free admission and open all year round.
