To build a new ‘purpose built’ Centre capable of delivering FSC’s unique and popular Eco Adventure courses, with a bed capacity of around 300. Within 2 hours driving distance from London, our main client base, we are looking at locations in the Thames Gateway and the Midlands. Eco Adventure provides a combination of environmental and adventurous activities in an outdoor residential setting and has proved to be a very popular choice of residential activity amongst the younger secondary school pupils.

    Situation

As a charity and not-for-profit organisation, the FSC is the UK’s leading provider of education ‘in, about and for the environment’. The FSC works directly with 80,000 people each year, the majority of whom are young people. Its wide-ranging brief is to share knowledge, understanding and skills right across the spectrum of arts, humanities and sciences. FSC owns and manages 17 Centres across the UK providing specialist Centres providing environmental, outdoor, residential, day visit, adventurous activities. Following on from our successes of working with all London secondary schools through the government funded London Challenge project (which aimed to raise educational attainment in London) FSC has collected convincing evidence for the need to develop a dedicated Eco Adventure Centre within 2 hours travel time of London. Eco Adventure is a product unique to FSC which delivers an integrated approach to environmental studies and outdoor adventure activities. Currently only 2 of our Centres are able to provide such courses and we have identified a growing demand for this type of course form our customers. One option would be to adapt an existing Centre to deliver more Eco Adventure courses. However many of our Centres at set in stunning locations, in old country houses which are not suited to this type of course and do not have the ‘bed’ capacity for whole year groups form secondary schools (approx 300 children). FSC wishes to build a new dedicated Eco Adventure Centre to ensure we provide an up to date, purpose built Centre to deliver these exciting courses to our young customers. Amount £5m
