Situation

Newstead Village is a place of incredible vitality and energy. Established with the opening of the coal mine over a century ago, the community was devastated by its closure in 1987. While the village still suffers from extreme deprivation, over the past decade a number of inspirational visionaries have mobilised the exceptional spirit of the population to deliver small scale projects that have created tangible benefits for all.

Solution

Set up sustainable, profitable enterprises to develop income to maintain the site and provide a grant fund to be reinvested in the village. -Develop an annual commercial music festival – second weekend event 9 – 11 September 2011 -Creation of a sustainable visitor centre and car park – completion May 2011 -Conversion of ponds into fishing lakes for the use of both CAST (an alternative education project using angling as a form of engagement) and paying customers – completion April 2011
