    Situation

CAST is an educational angling project. The project uses angling as a means to inspire and motivate young people to develop an interest in and enjoy learning by teaching them how to set out to catch specimen sized fish of a variety of species. This becomes a transferable skill. CAST encourages young people to recognise the merits of learning skills in order to achieve goals and understand the links between education and success. Courses, activities and groups developed by CAST are designed to engage young people in positive activities and in the case of community based projects this long term programme is supported by the recruitment of adult volunteers and the development of social enterprise activities. CAST school courses run by the CAST Team now operate with schools throughout Nottinghamshire whilst the Project also delivers courses in partnership with North Notts College in Bassetlaw and with Junction 16, a project of Derby LEA, in the City of Derby. Workshops are commissioned by Youth Offending Service and other agencies. In addition to delivering courses and workshops CAST has taken over the lease for Cornerstone House in Newstead Village as a base for teaching activities. The building doubles as a drop in centre for young people to access advice on careers, cv’s etc: A long term commitment is still to develop a learning Centre built on a complex of pools which will support the projects drive to sustainability.
