    Situation

Those to benefit from this post would be the local community of Sedbergh and beyond as well as the 20,000 visitors per year. Workshops and talks at Farfield have, in the past, attracted attendance from a 20/30 mile radius of the building. Local schools would benefit since they currently have minimal engagement with the Mill. School visits are often requested, but activity and education resources are needed to make the visits effective and to ensure they meet the national curriculum. There are two secondary schools, a school for those with special needs and a primary school all in this small market town and all of those are keen to work with the Mill, if we can provide the right education experience for their students. The local community would also benefit from a programme of practical arts and craft workshops. We are often asked to provide these, and occasionally do very successfully , but we do not have the staff to sustain a regular programme. As the development project progresses, Farfield will become an important satellite resource for textile learning and research from the University of Cumbria. The 15 Open Studios of artists are also keen to be involved in education work but don’t currently have the focus or means to administrate and organise a programme. An Education Officer will also focus on our 15 Farfield Artists and their professional development, creating opportunities for mentoring and shadowing with exhibiting international artists and artists in residence.
