Young adults with learning disabilities (18-30) in the Leeds area have very little support at a time when they are going through a great deal of change. We want to start a group catering for this age group looking at world cultures.

Registered Charity in England and Wales (1091809)
As stated above the age group 18-30 traditionally has a lack of provision at a time when they may be leaving full time education, into social care, looking at volunteering or accessing employment opportunities. We want to provide a forum where they can meet other young adults going through the same experiences and build friendships in a relaxed, social atmosphere. The group would work on the theme of exploring different cultures. This would take the form of building activities that encourage a healthy and active attitude. For example Indian Week could look at different foods from the country and we could also run a Bollywood dance session, encouraging members to be more active and to encourage a healthy attitude towards food. We also hope, through this cultural platform, we will be able to engage with some of the local BME communities who traditionally have not accessed our services. This would be a great step forward for Leeds Mencap as we are well placed in the community to access communities that traditionally have not sought support. The group will provide a wealth of opportunity for it's members and will also provide a couple of hours respite for their families. The group would host a library of information for families as well to sign post them to services they may not know about to ensure the best opportunities for their child/loved one. (The cost quoted is per year)
