This groundbreaking project is aimed at 5-7 year olds and seeks to reduce the level of aggression, violence and bullying in the playground. It encourages young children’s personal and emotional development, physical and mental well-being and full social inclusion regardless of ethnicity, culture or ability. It is delivered across racial, cultural, class and religious divides, in the children’s own schools.

    Situation

Racism and intolerance shows little, if any, sign of diminishing and may even be growing amongst ever younger groups of children. During 2003 the Foundation developed a programme of learning to arrest this trend…a programme that can be delivered to a wide range of children, particularly in areas of disadvantage. Due to feedback from teachers that they felt ill-equipped or ill-skilled to tackle prejudice and discrimination among children, the Foundation has developed a 10 week ‘circle time’ programme, to provide teachers with resources and skills to tackle this issue on an ongoing basis. The Foundation believes that, with appropriate backing, this programme could be developed into a national teaching resource. Funding is sought to develop the programme further.
