We opened our Education Centre two years ago. The Education Centre provides education and training in all aspects of end of life care for both Hospice staff and for other external healthcare professionals working in our local community such as in hospitals and nursing homes. This includes educating students at the University of Brighton and the Brighton and Sussex Medical School. Our programmes cover both medical and non-medical training including palliative care, communication skills and moving and lifting patients. Our aim is always to better equip people with the skills and knowledge to deliver the best possible care to their patients. We also train Hospice volunteers and non-medical staff such as our cooks, housekeepers and administrators. Courses include end of life care, manual handling, computer skills, human resources, food hygiene, public speaking and presentation skills. During 2007/2008, a total of 1,274 people received education and training in end of life care. 730 participants were from external health and social care providers. A gift of £250,000 would cover the costs of running the Education Centre for a period of 18 months including staff salaries and premises rent and power costs.
