Getting from A to B can be hugely challenging for a visually impaired person, especially if they are older or have other disabilites. Having access to safe and reliable transport is a must.

    Situation

BCBS has two minibuses that are constantly out on the road, taking visually impaired people to and from a range of activities that would otherwise simply not be accessible to them. For many of the visually impaired people helped by BCBS, life can be very isolated especially if they do not live near public transport (particularly in more remote areas) or for whom public transport does not provide a suitable service. Taxis are an option but expensive and can mean that visually impaired people are only able to go out when someone is able to help them. BCBS' minibuses are a lifeline to visually impaired people taking advantage of the opportunities available to them, but running them is costly. Each year they have to be MOT'd, serviced and insured. There are often on-going repairs and fuel is increasingly expensive. The minibus drivers work as required and offer a tremendous service, helping passengers into and out of the vehicle, making sure they get in to their home safely. And, as you can imagine, this all takes some organising by BCBS. Each year BCBS spends around £15,000 to run its transport project, a vital part of its work. Contributions made by visually impaired service users towards the cost of any travel do not meet the full cost, leaving BCBS to fund the rest from its unrestricted income.
