People from a South Asian background are at double the risk of suffering a stroke, yet there is a disproportionately low uptake of Social Services due to language barriers and lack of appropriate cultrual understanding. This project, working with the Confederation of Indian Organisations, will pilot a unique outreach, advocacy and support service in Leicestershire for the South Asian community.

    Situation

The Stroke Association and the Confederation of Indian Organisations (CIO) , have collaborated to form this pilot project around such issues, targeting the population in Leicestershire. Never before has such work been undertaken. The project aims to: - improve access to appropriate health and social care for South Asians affected by stroke; - raise awareness in order to prevent stroke within the South Asian community; - reduce isolation and promote of independence, thus restoring skills and confidence of stroke survivors; - provide better channels of communication for those who have had a stroke, their carers and families; and - increase access to information about stroke for those who require it most. Designed after extensive consultation with key parties (listed below), the project will set out an advocacy, outreach and support service in Leicestershire in partnership with CIO and with support from Leicester City Social Services; Leicestershire County Council Adult Social Care Services; and University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust. Combined with The Stroke Association’s links with health organisations at a service provision and policy level, the partnership will be able to effect change at both a grass-roots and strategic level, thus leading to improved preventative and acute care for the South Asian community.
