The Cutty Sark Conservation Project will ensure that the world's most famous ship, and only surviving extreme clipper and icon of the great age of commercial sail, will be enjoyed by future generations - even the potentially devasting fire of May 2007. Our vision is to not only raise Cutty Sark from the ashes but to revitalise her for a new century.

    Situation

We will tackle the fire damage, treating corrosion and deterioration and conserving the original fabric using a mix of cutting-edge science and technology along with time-honoured craftmanship - creating a new centre of excellence in maritime conservation. We aim higher - to quite literally raise the standard of historic ship presentation by lifting the ship by 3m, allowing visitors to marvel at her beautiful lines in a stunning new Dry Berth gallery. A sophisticated glass canopy around the waterline will give all-weather protection to the lower hull and create an exciting new exhibition and entertainment space. Inside, inspirational storytelling will focus on the ship's thrilling encounters with people and cultures across the world. On deck, visitors will experience first-hand what it was like to hoist sail and handle rigging.
