We provide a service for people with brain injury to help them rehabilitate socially and to integrate them back into their local communities. The Outreach Service has been highly successful and we now wish to expand it to the whole of Somerset.

    Situation

Our Outreach Service has been in existence for just over 2 years in a limited part of Somerset. It is a highly intensive, one-to-one operation which develops clear objectives for individual clients, enabling them to regain their self respect and establish the best quality of life possible. This includes creating opportunities to obtain work, work experience or education, developing social outlets and new interests and enabling them to become more independent by teaching them key life skills and creating local support networks. Living with someone with brain injury can be very stressful and many families break up as a result. We therefore work with the families too in order to develop strategies for them which will reduce the stress and thereby enable those families to stay together. The quality of the service we provide has been applauded by everyone who has contact with us, including all the professionals who take advantage of what we do. However, due to the intensive nature of the work, it is a very expensive service to run and the amount we are able to charge falls very short of what it actually costs. There is no doubt that this new service has incredibly high value, and we therefore want to expand it across the county. Any funding we can obtain will enable us to achieve this goal and maintain the current service, without affecting the other operations we conduct.
