We want to help children re-discover play, too often play is sedentary, solitary and restricted by adults overly concerned with risk. Without taking risks in play children won’t learn how to manage and be rewarded by risk taking in adult life. If this happens we will lose from our society richness flair and entrepreneurial spirit.

    Situation

Many of the children we work with have their play restricted in one of two ways. Either their parents have a pessimistic view of the risks their children face, or they have so few restrictions placed upon them they are taking too many risks becoming a nuisance to their communities and a danger to themselves. We want to develop a play centre that allows children to experiment, take risks and build their own play spaces, and lets their parents realise risk and appropriate supervision is an important aspect of play - and not all risks are equal ! The centre will be a place where children can run, climb, skip, hide, play with ropes, jump, practise cartwheels, throw and kick balls, make friends, fall out, build fires, grow things, tell stories, climb trees, take risks, get wet, explore nature, build dens, get dirty, dress up, pretend, keep animals, dig holes, swing on tyres, shout, fight, invent games, make things, paint pictures, talk with their friends – or just sit! We will use the funds to re-design one of our existing buildings into an indoor centre. In addition, we will create an outside space that requires the minimum of adult intervention to be safe for outside and environmental activity and then staff the centre with play support workers. We will work out the specifics of the design with the help of the local children.
