One on four adults in England has a mental illness; one third of these are parents with dependent children. Between 1/3 and 2/3 of children whose parents have mental health problems will develop problems either in childhood or adult life. Building Bridges works to break the cycle of mental illness and social isolation. Building Bridges is unique, we work wiht parents and thier children together, strengthening the relationship between parent and child and bridging the gap between support services for adults and services for children. Our work has shown that this model can be applied to many of the serious and complex needs faced by the most vulnerable and excluded families in the country. It can help mothers and children escaping domestic abuse, parents with substance misuse issues and parents with learning difficulties rebuild and improve ther and their children's lives. It costs £70,980 per year to provide a mental health bed in hospital. It costs £110,000 to place a child in care whilst their parent is in hospital. It costs Family Action just £4,00 per year for a Building Bridges programme to support a whole family in their own home. Family Action has launched an appeal to raise £1,000,000 over the next three years to open 5 new Building Bridges services in addition to the 13 currently operational.
