As we look to this Christmas here's a radical thought, what if we calculated what we would normally spend on Christmas – presents, cards, food, clothes, parties – and decided to spend just half of that leaving the other half to give away?
It ran from 10:00 AM, 6 December 2010 to 10:00 AM, 4 January 2011
The Dalit community in India has limited access to education, which affects their future opportunities in life. The Dalits make up 250 million of India’s 1.2 billion people. They are the “untouchables” in the caste system and most are denied access to education, many forms of employment, health care and legal justice. Of the 28 million people in modern-day slavery or human trafficking, 14 million of those are Indian, mostly Dalits.
Just Christmas aims to support RED International, who, by request of the Dalit leaders, work with the Dalits for their emancipation and empowerment. This includes establishing education centres, providing health care services, enabling self-sustaining business and employment opportunities, political advocacy and anti-trafficking awareness. Just Christmas will provide funding to promote education programmes for Dalit children.
