Every year the Society spends over £100,000 on providing transport for seafarers worldwide. This vital service enables seafarers to contact loved ones, visit local amenities or even just enjoy time away from their ships. The Society’s provision of transport benefits over 20,000 seafarers annually.

    Situation

The Society’s vital service is needed as seafarers lead isolated lives, separated from their families for 9 - 12 months at a time, and with no access to phones or the internet on an astonishing 84% of ships. Due to increasing commercial pressure ships frequently only dock in port for a few hours at a time and seafarers have very little opportunity to go ashore. Relationships are placed under severe strain and all too often this leads to family breakdowns

    Solution

This vital free transport service will provide seafarers with access to amenities, such as telephones or internet to contact their families and will also allow them the opportunity to leave their ship to refresh themselves. The Society has found that a great many seafarers feel isolated while away at sea and we hope that each Sailors’ Society vehicle acts as a visible reminder that they are supported and valued for their work.
