Situation

Young people’s voices are rarely heard in the mainstream and negative perceptions of youth permeate the media. At a time when youth unemployment may go on to create a generation of disaffected and disengaged adults, young people need opportunities to speak out about what’s happening in their worlds, build up skills that will improve their life chances and develop a sense of agency to bring about positive change.

Solution

The Tricycle will hand over the reins of the theatre for a week-long festival programmed by Tricycle Young Producers. They will premiere new plays and performances, programme cinema screenings and masterclasses that enable other young people to learn new skills from professional artists and create exciting theatre. The Takeover enables young people from underrepresented communities in the arts to experience theatre.
