We believe access to the arts is for the many and not the few, and is central to the Centre’s mission to be a place where people of all ages, backgrounds and experiences can learn about and participate in the arts. ‘Make It Yours’ is a programme of free performances and participatory events.

    Situation

Throughout the 1980s & 90s, the industrial areas of Cardiff docks and South Wales valleys saw rapid loss of investment, relatively high rates of unemployment and attendant problems of economic and social deprivation. Although economic conditions have improved over the last 10 years, there remains a strong deficit in terms of access to cultural and artistic facilities in these areas. We want to maintain a free high quality arts programme for all visitors to enjoy, but this is currently at risk.

    Solution

Participation in cultural activity makes a real difference. ‘Make It Yours’ creates a sense of belonging, challenging the widely-held perception that the arts is “not for me”. The project encourages visitors to deepen their engagement with the arts and provides gifted performers, community groups, talented musicians and emerging artists with the opportunity to develop their skills and experience by performing to a diverse audience in a major arts venue. We showcase talent and nurture it.
