Our shortlisted artists explore what it means to live in our world today, commenting on the social, political and cultural context of where they live and work, in a way that has global resonance as well as local significance. Exploring topical issues such as identity, citizenship, immigration, the environment and war, they question our assumptions and challenge our understanding of the world around us.

Contemporary art provides an important platform from which we can address very real issues in todays troubled world from a perspective that is independent of party politics. These ideas, and indeed this project, have the capacity to inspire and transform diverse audiences and participants. Artes Mundi’s theme of the human condition, the exploration of contemporary issues that are common across cultural and linguistic borders, gives the exhibition a unique place in the UK and on the world stage
