In high-income countries survival rates for childhood cancers are around 80%, whilst in low income countries they are as low as 5-10%. World Child Cancer works to redress this global inequality, and we are dedicated solely to helping children with cancer in low and middle income countries.

    Situation

Whilst survival rates of 50% can be achieved in Cameroon, currently only 15% of children with cancer are diagnosed and survival rates average at less than 20%. The project looks to address this, whilst also addressing the issue of access. Cameroon is an extremely rural country and many families simply can’t afford to access the hospital for care. Many children are not being reached, or unable to reach facilities for childhood cancer treatment.

    Solution

The project will solve this problem by empowering local doctors, nurses and healthcare workers by equipping them with specialised training; and by strengthening the capacity of the health care system to reach those in distant rural settings, and support others in accessing the hospitals facilities.
