    Situation

In our 2009 research children & youth indicated that lack of education was a push factor to the streets. An estimated 1 million children in Kenya are not in school despite free primary education. However, families are required to provide a school uniform, shoes and books, as well as examination fees; consequently many children either do not enrol or drop-out of education due to poverty. High absentee rates from primary education have also been linked to child labour, sickness & parental neglect.

    Solution

Street workers will contact children, encouraging them to engage with the shelter, access basic needs & education. Counselling will prepare the children and families for a return home and will be supported with school uniform, educational materials and exam fees, ensuring a return to education. Families will also be supported to engage in Bio-intensive farming & business opportunities to ensure food security & income to support their children in school.
