Self Help Groups have been shown to have a positive effect on local communities, helping people to address the issues of poverty that may be affecting them. We want to roll out Self Help Groups across Ethiopia, empowering poor communities to work together to tackle their specific needs.

Situation
Poverty in rural Ethiopia is widespread with 44% of the country living below the poverty line. It is apparent that although many communities may be affected by poverty, every community is unique; problems and concerns vary depending on many factors such as disease, poor harvest and clean water provision. Too often communities are provided with help and advice that does not address their specific need. This often reduces ownership of that community on a project, in turn risking its sustainability
Solution
This project is part of a larger programme that will establish another 3,000 Self Help Groups across Ethiopia. Each group empowers up to 20 members of a community to gather, identify needs of their community and work together to address these using their own resources. The Kale Heywet Church, a partner of Tearfund, is already established 1000's of communities across Ethiopia. This unique position means that they can be actively facilitating this work irrespective of people’s beliefs.
