Focus on children with special needs who are very much neglected in rural Africa as they are not accepted in mainstream education. As there is only one school in this locality in rural Mwingi District and no public transport, most children from up to 30kms. are unable to attend. At present a few lucky ones sleep on a thin mattress on the classroom floor.

    Situation

AAF wishes to provide decent dormitory accommodation to allow pupils to board during the week. We aim to construct two purpose built dormitories- single sexed – for up to 24 pupils to allow proper sleeping areas for the children who are both physically and mentally handicapped. To provide suitable accommodation for a matron to oversee the pupils, and to equip the dormitories with proper beds suitable for the disabled and provide adequate toileting facilities. Rainwater harvesting tanks will provide clean drinking water and the tanks will be sealed with filters to prevent contamination by vermin and mosquitoes. Work to be carried out in partnership with volunteer labour from the local community, with food for work incentives. Cost of materials £6,500 Cost of skilled labour £2,500 Food for work incentives £700 Purchase and delivery of beds etc. £1,300 Construction of VIP latrines £1,300 TOTAL £12,300
