Countless thousands of children of poor families in developing countries have one dream – Education – Education – Education. They know that the only route out of the poverty they have been born into, is to receive a good education. In Kenya many children achieve good grades at primary level. But there the dream ends. At secondary level schooling has a cost which their family cannot afford. They are willing to work hard to achieve their dream, but poverty works against them at every turn.

    Situation

For ten years now the Akamba Aid Fund has been helping to keep that dream alive by giving youngsters who really show promise and are motivated to make the best use of a secondary education at one of the several private schools in the Mwingi District. Each year we invite detailed written applications for support from students in the District. Then our two trusted AAF Field Agents explore each applicants educational background and family situation, discussing with past head teachers their suitability for support. Then in August the trustees meet with our agents to examine all applications and decide which will fill the available places. We offer suitable students a place at the school of their choice from a list of ten good schools within the area, which we have approved. We offer them full financial support for four years board, together with funds to cover any extra books, uniform, transport etc. This costs AAF an average of £240 - £260 per student per year, and funds are paid direct to the school each term. Each course lasts four years. A few of the most promising students are then offered support at places of further education, subject to availability of funds. In the last ten years we have supported a total of sixty students of which five have gone to university courses, and three have now graduated.
