    Situation

Transport is provided by volunteers using their own cars to take people to medically related appointments. These may include GPs, hospitals, dentists, opticians, etc. There is an annual registration fee to be part of the scheme - £14.50 for 12 months or £8 for 6 months. In addition to this, passengers pay the driver 40p per mile to cover his/her expenses with a minimum charge of £2.50. The Car Scheme provides a lifeline for many people who are otherwise housebound, and volunteers and the journeys they offer enable people to maintain some sense of independence and connection to their community.
