Our education centre at Nower Wood, near Leatherhead in Surrey, is currently operating at full capacity with 5,000 children visiting each year. Our vision is to build a new, state of the art, carbon neutral education centre which will allow us to welcome more students thus increasing awareness of nature conservation.

    Situation

Nower Wood Educational Nature Reserve, near Leatherhead, is located within 81 acres of ancient oak woodland with small areas of chalk grassland, a heathland glade and several ponds. Nower Wood itself is a Site of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCI) and home to a wide variety of plants and animals. Management is aimed at maximising the reserve's educational value for children and adults whilst keeping disturbance to the wildlife at a minimum. The convenient location of Nower Wood means that the demand for our education service far exceeds the number of groups we can accommodate in our current facilities. Our plan is to develop the facilities at Nower Wood to increase the capacity for student visits, the number of classrooms, and provide a conference room, reception area and suitable catering and toilet facilities. The building will provide an opportunity to demonstrate the highest levels of environmental and ecological design and construction. Ideally, we would like to have the building in place for Surrey Wildlife Trust's 50th birthday in 2009.
