For centuries musicians have brought music to life for their audiences - something the students and professors of the Royal College of Music do on a daily basis. Even though music is a living tradition, performers rely on manuscripts, printed music, audio and video recordings to interpret the music of the great composers and performers. The RCM Library has over 300,000 individual items and is a world-renowned resource with an exceptional collection of printed and manuscript volumes dating from the 16th century to the present day. As a working resource, the Library is used daily by students, professors, staff, professional musicians, broadcasters, composers, teachers and researchers. However, as a result of age, handling and general use, many volumes and recordings are in urgent need of conservation. Some of our historic recordings, for example, are in analogue formats that will not last and need to be transferred to a digital medium for future preservation. Conservation is a specialist skill: each item needs treatment using established paper and binding conservators and cutting-edge technology. Donations to the Restore a Score fund will enable us to undertake vital conservation work on the Library's collections on an ongoing basis. All donations, whatever their size, will make a difference.
