Situation

Swimming is one of the most inclusive of all sports and leisure pursuits; regardless of age, ability or fitness level, most people can benefit. Unfortunately, north east Essex suffers from a lack of water space and, as such, the local community have few opportunities to swim. This £6.9m facility to be built at Wivenhoe Park, Colchester, will offer learn to swim programmes, access for the local schools, swimming associations and qualifications in teaching, coaching, lifesaving and lifeguarding. The pool will also provide supported access for disabled individuals and user groups and offer 'healty life-style programmes' for the overweight. As well as supporting the local community, the pool will also facilitate cutting edge research in the areas of sports science, healthy living and cardiac rehabilitation. Swim Park Essex has a £6.9m build cost, of which the University has committed up to £3.2m (should the outstanding balance be secured). The University has also agreed to meeting the ongoing operational costs for the duration of the life of the pool.
