The British Red Cross has a vital role to play supporting the emergency services throughout the UK, a role that many people are not aware of. With the increasing frequency of natural and man-made disasters we must be ready to respond, to support the statutory services and vulnerable people. Across the north west of England we urgently need to invest in training and equipping more volunteers, developing our infrastructure and upgrading our fleet of vehicles. The investment we make now will ensure we can fulfil this role effectively and vastly improve the service the British Red Cross is able to offer vulnerable people throughout the region, both in the event of a major emergency and on a day-to-day basis, now and in years to come.

    Situation

Emergency planning and response is the first priority of the British Red Cross, our role is defined within the Civil contingencies Act and in the north west we work closely with emergency planners, fire and ambulance service and are the lead voluntary agency in the region. A transport accident, terrorist attack or natural disaster would seriously affect the north west’s infrastructure, population and business continuity. We must ensure that we have the trained volunteers, vehicles and infrastructure to be able to provide a timely and appropriate response to such a disaster. We also intend to train 20,000 members of the public in life saving first aid skills, this will improve communities’ ability to cope with emergencies and be better equipped to deal with less serious incidents in the home. The British Red Cross in Merseyside, Manchester and Lancaster urgently need to raise £2.3 million to train and equip more volunteers, develop our infrastructure and upgrade our fleet of vehicles, to ensure we can continue to support the people of the region.
