    Situation

There has been an unprecedented 28% increase in disability in the last 20 years as more people survive an accident or illness they previously would have died from. There is no statutory funding currently available to support the type of comprehensive Vocational Rehabilitation service that the Papworth Trust delivers. Individuals who acquire disability can have a strong adverse psychological reaction to their impairment, leaving them suicidal and feeling that they will be dependant on the long-term care of others. Papworth’s experience is that if individuals obtain the right combination of medical, vocational and life-skills support then frequently they can make significant progress towards returning to independent living and the world of work. Papworth Trust is expanding its established Vocational Rehabilitation Programme to meet the unmet need. In a 3-year project, started last year, it plans to increase the capacity to provide 200% more people with an individualised, high quality programme of support, from 39 people a year to 122 annually by 2009/10. The current Vocational Rehabilitation Programme has been proven to deliver tangible & transformational outcomes for clients. The results of independent research show that since the Papworth Vocational Rehabilitation Programme began: • 91% of clients who completed the Programme found or were in a position to look for employment. • 98% of clients who found employment kept it in the long term. The benefits and outcomes for clients will reflect the unique personal situation of the individual concerned. The Programme successfully works with clients who have a range of acquired disabilities including: acquired brain injury, orthopaedic injury, back & neck injury (including whiplash & spinal cord injuries), amputations and musculo-skeletal injuries. The Papworth Trust Vocational Rehabilitation Programme is available to any individual requiring intensive rehabilitation following the acquisition of a disability. This means clients could come from anywhere in the UK. Papworth Trust has completed Phase 1 of the expansion increasing the residential facilities by 13 units. The focus is now on generating the funding needed to develop the service delivery facilities. A private sector donation of £106,400 has been committed towards the costs of developing the service delivery facilities. Construction & refurbishment of the gym facilities and office space £94,377 Gym equipment £54,727 Assessment and client equipment £48,122 Office equipment £8,260 IT and telephones £67,300 Total costs £272,787 Total fundraising target remaining £166,387
