The Papworth Trust Employment Programmes provide support to enable people with a disability or health condition to find and stay in work. They also work with employers to dispel the myths that exist around employing individuals with a disability. Many of the programmes are funded by central government. These programmes are currently aimed at getting individuals into work and providing the support needed in order to sustain that employment. However, there is no specialist provision to support individuals’ career development.

    Situation

Statistic and reports repeatedly show that the attitudes of employers, and sometimes even of disabled people themselves, mean that finding work can be very challenging. As a result individuals often do not have the confidence they need to progress within their chosen career. The individuals we work with tell us that, like their peers, they want a career not just a job. Through the provision of ongoing specialist careers advice the Papworth Trust believe everyone can continue to develop their self-esteem & confidence and achieve their career aspirations. The Programme Pilot would employ a Careers Adviser to work with individuals to create a personalised plan. Specific outcomes for clients will be different for each individual as it will depend on their experiences and personal situation before starting the Programme, however a distance travelled technique would be used to record outcomes. Monitoring, recording and reporting on the broad outcomes of the Pilot will enable the Trust to clearly demonstrate value to potential funders, partners and participants in order to develop the Programmes sustainability. It is proposed that the Programme Pilot takes place in either: Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Essex or Bedfordshire. The service would be accessible to anyone with a disability, within the geographic region, wanting support to assist them to progress in the workplace. It is envisaged that the pilot would support between 40 and 50 participants in the first year. Working with our network of employers, GPs, Social Services and NHS Trust contacts we would promote the Programme Pilot to ensure that the background, experiences and career aspirations of the client group are as broad as possible. The costs for 1-year of a Programme Pilot are: Salary for Careers Adviser (Including: NI & pension contributions) 26,161 Office accommodation 1,800 Expenses (Including: hardware, software, stationery & travel) 1,848 Training 500 Service promotion 1,000 Total Cost 31,309 It is envisaged that this Programme Pilot will run for a minimum of 2-years and up to 3-years.
