    Situation

Raising the Mire - By the end of 2007, Durham Wildlife Trust is likely to have added Stanley Moss to its reserves portfolio. Stanley Moss is thought to be the only raised mire left in County Durham. A raised mire is a rare type of wetland habitat that has a domed or 'raised' structure. To ensure the long-term future of this valuable habitat, the Trust wishes to carryout a one-year programme of restoration works managed by existing Trust staff. This will include grip blocking and fencing to facilitate grazing of the site. The Trust also wishes to make Stanley moss accessible for wheelchair users and people of restricted mobility by installing a boardwalk and other features. This will be a unique opportunity to make a wetland habitat accessible to all sectors of the community, and offer the chance for involvement in conservation work to those who are usually excluded due to the nature of the terrain.
