Flying Scotsman, or, 4472, as it is also affectionately known was the first express passenger locomotive to carry passengers non-stop from London to Edinburgh. Currently the much loved engine is in need of an overhaul after the National Railway Museum (NRM) saved the iconic engine for the nation.

    Situation

Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and built in Doncaster in 1923 Flying Scotsman highlighted Yorkshire as a leading force in world engineering. Flying Scotsman is in every sense a record breaker. It completed the first non-stop journey from London to Edinburgh (almost 400 miles) in 1928. The locomotive went on to be the first steam locomotive to officially reach a speed of over 100 m.p.h. in 1934. Since the Museum acquired Flying Scotsman in 2004 the locomotive has undergone a huge amount of work in order to get back on the rails and response to the engine since it has been located at the NRM has been overwhelming - only emphasising the significance of Flying Scotsman to so many people. The NRM plans to continue to use Flying Scotsman as an educational tool and once the engine has undergone the work required we can confirm Flying Scotsman will once again be travelling the lines from London – Edinburgh. We are working to get Flying Scotsman back on line and this overhaul is a significant milestone in the life of this locomotive. As you may be aware, a steam engine is made up of numerous parts and every one of these needs to be examined during an overhaul. Therefore, the NRM has launched the Steam Our Scotsman Appeal, a public appeal to raise £250,000. All donations received for the SOS Appeal will be spent directly on this locomotive. Please help us to get this much-loved, magnificent engine ‘in steam’ and back on the tracks. Your support is very much appreciated. If you do make a donation (by donating the respective amount through the below Donate Online button) please ensure that the 'I would like to pass my contact details to the charity' box remains ticked, (after the address details) and we will happily send you a special SOS certificate and keep you updated with the work on Flying Scotsman. Alternatively, please give whatever you can to help this iconic locomotive once again enthrall and inspire the masses. If you do donate £10 or over and wish for your name to appear on the Flying Scotsman website Wall of Fame please e-mail sos.appeal@nrm.org.uk after donating or call 01904 685707.
