    Situation

TRaVEL was set up to meet a clear need to support homeless individuals to access training and volunteering. Many of the people we support want to take steps back in the world of work but periods of homelessness have severely damaged their confidence and they need a supportive environment in which they can rebuild core skills needed for the workplace. Participants undertake an eight week training course covering areas such as self-esteem, confidence, communication skills, assertiveness and team working skills. They are then placed in a volunteering role within the organisation where a member of staff supports them to gain vital work experience. They have had the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of tasks including: housing management, running activities for residents, reception and administrative work and helping run a social enterprise. Volunteering placements last between 2-4 months and as they come to an end participants form an action plan to identify how to move on to their next step in their employment and training goal. TRaVEL aims to increased employability and social inclusion for participants. We have ambitious target for people to move on to mainstream education and into paid employment. TRaVEL aims to utilise skills and experiences of service users in their voluntary placements to improve the quality of the service the organisation provides. It also provides other service users with inspiring role models of people who have been through similar experiences to themselves and have been successful in making changes in their lives. TRaVEL costs approximately £120,000 to deliver per year. Staff costs: £91,000 Rent: £13,000 Office costs: £8,000 Expenses for participants: £8,000
