In 2004 Marie Curie Cancer Care launched its first major palliative care service improvement plan, the Marie Curie Delivering Choice Programme, to provide greater choice for patients in end of life care. The programme has five projects underway across the UK - in Lincolnshire, Leeds, Tayside (Scotland), Barnet (north London) and south-east London. Underpinning the Marie Curie Delivering Choice Programme’s national roll-out is the development of an on-line Toolkit supported by project advisors, which will empower Primary Care Trusts and providers of care to implement the programme for themselves.

    Situation

The Toolkit is split into four levels: Level one: Learn more Users find out more about the programme and make an informed decision on whether to move forward with implementing it locally. Level two: Step-by-step guide Supported by project advisors, users follow a step-by-step plan to implementing the programme. Level three: Sharing knowledge Users take part in discussion forums and download findings from other projects to help inform their own. Level four: Face to face advice from project advisors provided by Marie Curie Cancer Care. Levels one and two of the Toolkit will be the first to reach completion in January 2008, when the testing phase will begin. Marie Curie Cancer Care will work with a small number of Primary Care Trusts to test the new Toolkit, providing advice and support at every step of the way, and is encouraging registrations of interest. The full and complete Toolkit, including level three – ‘sharing knowledge’, will be live towards the end of 2008.
