    Situation

People are enjoying fuller and longer lives than ever before and the population in the UK is ageing rapidly. A 160% increase in the number of people over 90 is expected in the UK by 2040. Abbeyfield has offered housing and support for older people in Beaminster since 1981 and encourages residents to remain independent. We are now seeking funding to make the garden area accessible for the residents.

    Solution

The original garden was designed 30 years ago when residents were typically 30 years younger that they are today. As a result, our current residents are unable to negotiate the steep gravel paths around the garden and have to make do with the view from the house conservatory. We want to provide a safe wander path which will mean that they, their family and friends, can enjoy the garden throughout the year and will also be able to grow their own plants and vegetables should they want to.
