    Situation

The British Crime Survey 2004 suggests 2 million people a year are victims of stalking however in 2009-10 only 53,029 cases were officially recorded, of those cases only 6,581 resulted in a guilty verdict at court and only 1197 of those cases resulted in offenders being jailed. There is a huge lack of understanding in the entire criminal justice system about the seriousness of stalking and how to correctly and most affectively use harassment legislation meaning few victims receive justice.

    Solution

The Helpline offers information, guidance and support on topics ranging from criminal and civil legislation to personal safety. We also talk to representatives from agencies such as the police and Crown Prosecution Service about the difficulties faced by stalking victims and what they would like to see improved.
