As a result of HIV/Aids which is particularly prevalent in Livingstone, with a 35% infection rate, there are many children, extremely ill, or dying, yet existing in squalid conditions where often grandparents struggle to care for several other children as well, with little food or medical care and hardly any comfort, cleanliness or relief. The establishment of the Rainbow Hospice will enable the Trust to provide dignified and caring support for these youngsters who do not deserve to suffer and die in the current abysmal conditions.

    Situation

The Rainbow Hospice will be based upon the current 12 acre secure site in Livingstone, Zambia. A 200 square metre building has already been refurbished and extensively redecorated for the purpose of housing the hospice. The building is adjacent to the Mwenda Medical Centre and the project will benefit from the considerable experience of the Director and staff of Rainbow Trust Africa who have successfully established major educational, medical and other relief initiatives over the last 12 years. Children from the villages surrounding Livingstone where Rainbow Africa is active and from the neighbourhood around the new site at Muzoka, will be brought to the centre for care and treatment. Some will be enabled to return to a life in their own community, some will benefit from respite care and support and some, inevitably, will die, but all will be offered relief from the squalid and inhuman conditions in which they would otherwise exist. We expect that Rainbow Hospice will accommodate up to 20 children and require a staff of 6. Detailed planning will commence once further funding is available and we are seeking capital of £40k to fully equip and furnish the building, together with a committment to the first five years operating costs estimated to be £35k pa.
